Despite Defne and Zach’s long-standing agreement not to exhibit with one another, they keep on doing it. This time, however, their thought processes underwent forced moments of convergence, and materialized as a collection of soft-spoken objects and pictures. What was lacking about the color blue? thought Defne. She looked back at her painting. It took a while before her eyes adjusted to it. Her images took time to reveal themselves, while Zach’s were just there. They took walks together to fix the air around a little bit. It was a Sunday but not that much of a Sunday. Coincidental structures and scenes gave them some ideas: Reflections, shadows, the repeating negative spaces. In the end, they still ended up with more-or-less their own thing, with small steps in the direction of the other.
In addition to their individual artistic practices, Defne Cemal and Zach Hodges founded and continue to run Kiralık Depo, a 12m2 exhibition space in Istanbul.
